Birmingham is the UK’s second-biggest city, offering plenty of job opportunities, a vibrant and diverse culture, and covers a wide area. For those who do not want to live within the city centre, commuting is a viable option and there are plenty of desirable suburbs for a mix of needs.

Our list of the best Birmingham commuter towns has something for first-time buyers, young professionals, families, and those looking for their forever home outside of the big city.

Dudley

We’re starting with one of the most affordable options for commuting to Birmingham – Dudley. It is half an hour’s drive from the city, and there is a train that can get to the centre in just 15 minutes.

Dudley offers an array of cafes, shops, and pubs, so there is no shortage of places to eat and socialise on the weekend. There is even an ancient castle and some of the lowest crime rates within the West Midlands area.

An anytime day return costs £5.50, and average house prices are £226,512.

Halesowen

Found just seven miles outside of the city centre, Halesowen is one of the best Birmingham commuter towns for schools and affordable housing. There are also plenty of impressive green spaces including Leasowes Park and the nearby Client Hills.

It does not currently have a train station, and Cradley HEalth is the closest option, but with house prices averaging £260,303 and around half an hour drive to Birmingham city centre, it is an excellent option for many. Plus, the number 9 bus can get you there in close to 40 minutes.

Leamington Spa

With an average commute cost of just over £2,000, Leamington Spa is another attractive option albeit a little further out of Birmingham city centre. It takes 50 minutes to commute by car and 35 minutes on public transport but it offers a pleasant retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

As the name suggests, it is a spa town on the River Leam, expect a quaint and serene way of life with green spaces galore. Combine the quiet with restaurants, pubs, and plenty of cafes and there is a lot to like. House prices are reflective of the attractive countryside life, with an average of around £351,969.

There are lots of quality primary and secondary schools making it a popular location for families.

Lichfield

Located in Staffordshire, the small city of Lichfield is just 18 miles north of Birmingham and offers excellent commuter links. The cost of commuting reflects this so expect to pay around £1,500 annually to get back and forth.

Cannock Chase is close by and is an area of outstanding beauty offering some of the most stunning scenery around Birmingham. Property is a little more affordable than the likes of Solihull yet Lichfield still has plenty to offer. There are eye-catching homes for young professionals and families, plus outstanding schools in and around Lichfield making it an attractive option.

Despite it being a small city, Lichfield has incredible period properties and new builds to offer something for everyone. The average house price is £325,722, but semi detached properties average £286,303, and terraced properties fetch £232,698.

Solihull

With an average house price of £365,172 and 30 minutes from the big city by car, Solihull is an attractive Birmingham commuter town. Public transport to the city centre can take as little as 12 minutes and an anytime day return costs around £6.30 from this historic market town.

It has a pleasant backdrop for bringing up a young family and was voted one of the top places to live in England in 2015. Solihull has excellent schools, a vibrant cafe culture, and an array of shopping options meaning a trip to Birmingham isn’t always necessary.

Solihull is one of the pricier towns on our list but it remains one of the best Birmingham commuter towns if you have the budget to spare. It is an affluent suburb surrounded by green areas, quality housing, and low crime rates. These all make Solihull one of the best places to live in the UK, let alone the West Midlands.

Sutton Coldfield

One of the most sought after areas of Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield has been in demand for some time and shows no signs of letting up. Families are drawn to the 2,400-acre parkland of Sutton Park, and commuters will find the 19-minute train into the city centre makes for a seamless journey to work.

The town centre features all the usual retailers as well as independent shops and a variety of restaurants.

Average house prices reflect the affluence of the area and are around £393,456 making Sutton Coldfield among the most expensive places to buy a property when commuting to Birmingham. Still, with outstanding schools and quality housing, it is hardly surprising.

Tamworth

Tamworth is a 30-minute drive to Birmingham and is one of the best commuter towns for value for money. The average property price is more affordable than most in the area at £229,151, yet there is plenty of stunning countryside on your doorstep.

Combine this with favourable transport links where the train takes 18 minutes and there is a lot to like. The average commute costs just over £1,500 a year adding to the appeal.

Families will find the long list of quality primary and secondary schools a genuine draw but there is enough about Tamworth to keep people of all ages happy. Something for the foodie, and shopper, it even offers snowboarding and skiing at SnowDome.

West Bromwich

Due to the size of the area, West Bromwich isn’t always seen as a commuter town but there is plenty of affordable housing meaning it is a valid option.

Average house prices are cheaper than Birmingham at £184,327 and a terraced property costs an average of £160,020. Ideal for young professionals looking to get on the property ladder, especially since Birmingham is only a 10-minute train ride away.
